The fascination of the North is enduring: vast, impenetrableconiferous forests on the edge of the Arcticpolar region, 'white' summer nights, the long darknessof snowy winters and the famous Northern Lights exerta magical attraction. The Fondation Beyeler is dedicatingan exhibition to this global phenomenon with landscapepaintings from the late 19th and early 20th centuriesfrom Scandinavia, Finland and Canada. In additionto works by famous painters such as Edvard Munch,Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Hilma af Klint, it also featurespaintings by artists who are highly respected in theirhome countries, but who-unjustly-have been virtuallyunknown in Central Europe until now. The Nordic pictorialworlds of Harald Sohlberg, Gustaf Fjæstad, EmilyCarr, Tom Thomson and Prince Eugen of Sweden arefinally being presented to a wide audience. Other artistsrepresented in the exhibition and catalogue are IvanShishkin, Anna Boberg, Helmi Biese, Lawren S. Harrisand J. E. H. Macdonald.
